About Us

South West Independent Medical Services is an independent occupational health company founded in 1989 in the South West of England by Consultant Occupational Health Physician Dr Alan Bray FRCP, FFOM FFOM(I), FRSPH. It has since expanded and now has a client base in many areas of the UK.

Formally of the Royal Navy, Alan has wide experience of commercial diving, tunnelling, offshore oil & gas, NHS trusts, local authority, waste management, civil service, animal workers, manufacturing and chemical industries. Alan holds HSE appointments for commercial diving, compressed air (tunnelling), radiation, lead and asbestos.

SWIMS is an owner led business and Alan personally negotiates and advises prospective contracts, visiting premises and meeting managers and employees.

Alan has a special interest in all aspects of the commercial diving, tunnelling and the oil & gas industry and has travelled extensively in Europe, Australia and New Zealand in secondments to hyperbaric units. Lecturing widely on the topic of diving safety, he is committed to promoting safe diving especially with those embarking on a career in the industry or moving into the instructional role in recreational diving.

No business is too small and SWIMS often closes the gap of affordability on the smaller premises of a few workers who can potentially miss out on occupational health provision. For these small enterprises often no contract or retainer is required, after risk assessment a tailored economic service can usually be negotiated.
